Outdoor Art Exhibit in Newport Beach
Over the last few weeks, you may have noticed some new additions joining the white rabbits inhabiting Civic Center Park in Newport Beach, CA. It turns out that what looked like some origami bears raiding a trash can along MacArthur Blvd. and a colorful tiki doll watching the sun go down in the west are part of nine new sculptures scattered on display throughout Civic Center Park that made their Grand Opening debut on Saturday, September 13, 2014. A tenth sculpture is set to join the exhibit in 2015.
The artwork, selected from 260 submissions by a panel comprised of professional artists and members of the City Arts Commission, will be on display for two years and then rotated out for a new exhibition. A self guided tour app, “MyNB,” is available on iTunes and Google Play.
Finally, you may also have noticed the rabbits are all sporting purple scarves this week. Why? Until I asked, it seemed only their hare-dresser knew for sure. There are no signs indicating the reason, but upon asking another park visitor, I discovered the fashion statement is to help raise Alzheimer’s awareness. World Alzheimer’s Day is September 21st.
A gallery of some of my favorite sculptures at Civic Center Park follows below.
Hi Vernon,
I love the shot you took of the sphere, may I use the image on my website? Thanks, Ivan
Ivan, I’d be honored to have one of my images displayed on your site. All I ask is for a photo credit with a link back to my site.
